What I Found In My Food

What's the grossest thing you've ever found in your food?

So. The other night we went out to dinner with our associate pastor and his family. We went here. Let me just start off by saying that it was delicious and I certainly intend to return. Our family got a stuffed pizza with mushrooms on the entire thing, olives on half and pepperoni on the other half. When it came out I discovered what a stuffed pizza actually is. This pizza was a thin layer of crust on the bottom with a thin layer of crust on the top. The top crust had a thin layer of sauce. Inside the two crusts was the thickest layer of mozzarella, ever maybe, and all of our delicious toppings. I'm of the mindset that just about everything tastes better with cheese. Things that usually have cheese taste better with more cheese. This pizza was seriously good. We had a gift card so it cost us next to nothing which is even better.

Before the pizza came, I wanted a salad. When I got my salad I put a little of it on a separate plate for Garrett. He happily started eating and I chatted a bit before shoveling a bite of salad into my mouth.

Holly: Oh. You're eating a hair.
Me: (reaching up to grab said hair which I suddenly felt between my lips) I hope it's mine.

At that point I started to pull the hair out of my mouth, between pursed lips. I met resistance. That cannot be a good sign. "Nope. Not mine." I said as I pulled a tiny hairball, which was wrapped around another item, out of my mouth. There were collective moans and groans at the table and I felt myself starting to come down with a raging case of the willies. I spat the remaining bite of salad into a napkin--as politely as one can spit into a napkin while simultaneously trying not to gag. Holly and I examined the hairy clump. Initially we thought we saw a wing. Upon further inspection I was unsure whether it was actually a wing or a small piece of plastic. There also seemed to be something fuzzy involved. A bit of fabric? The fuzzy body belonging to the wing? I'll never know. In any case, the object was tightly wound with hair.

We flagged the waiter and I said, "I'm not really sure what this is, exactly, but I don't really think I want to eat it." He was pretty mortified and took the salad away--although the rest of it was probably fine. In a matter of moments my new and much improved salad arrived followed, later, by the delicious pizza. And, I have to say, the pizza more than made up for the hairy fuzzy winged plastic piece that I'd tried to eat.

Chris later regaled us with the story of the bug he found in a frozen burrito. So, what kinds of gross things have you found in your food?

  1. We had bought chicken wings at a pizza restaurant and we got home to find they still had the feathers. That's not THAT bad, but that's all I can think of!

  2. I was so grossed out by your story!! I have to say the only thing that totally gagged me before when I found it in my burrito from a CA taco establishment was a long black hair. The kind that when you pull on it, the food that's wrapped in it, also comes out. My friend who was with me that spotted this hair hanging from my mouth was dry heaving which was making it worse. I have had a hard time not remembering the feeling of a black long hair being pulled from my mouth. Mind you I am a blond. AGH!!

  4. Um...did they should have at least comped your salad if not your whole meal. Gross.

My Mom found a cockroach in her Chinese food once.

  5. The school at which I worked for 3 years served breakfast every day... and one day they served these prepackaged doughnut type items... 3-4 kids brought theirs up with half or whole cockroaches in them... it was so very disturbing because it wasn't an isolated event!

  6. My stomach is churning - did you say you ate a revised salad? I would never have touched salad from that establishment again... and I don't say that lightly. I got sick from McDonald's chicken in 2001 and I have not eaten chicken from McDs since... and I eat there REGULARLY. ::shudder::

As far as anything weird or improperly placed in my food besides bacteria... can't say I remember anything ...

  7. Wow and ick! You're amazing for finishing the meal! The worst thing I ever found was a small curly hair in some macaroni and cheese off a buffet. (Gag) But I had one friend once find a small rock in her buritto (where the heck it came from I'll never know) and another friend got a cockroach in her margharita at a fairly well known eating establishment that is known to celebrate the end of the work week....

  8. When I was a teenager I went to Farrell's and ordered a burger and fries. I was almost done eating it when I discovered the beetle that had been crawling on my plate. Nasty. I was too shy to tell the waitress, just stopped eating. Now, I'd be telling the restaurant about it and getting my meal for free!

  9. I had a ladybug in my head of lettuce I was chopping up for dinner once. And in resturants I have found a hair. But Jer found a worm type thing in a can of green beans once.

  10. That was a foul find, and your matter-of-fact aplomb was perfect. I am always embarassed when that happens to me as if it was my fault. I, too, found a short curly on the far end of a stick of butter we were served on a little plate... this is as we neared that end after eating a huge loaf of delicious hot bread. Blech!!! You're always a joy to read- especially when the posts are labeled "things I shouldn't blog about."

  11. My friend in college got a bottle of apple juice from the campus cafeteria. He opened it and was just about to drink some when he said, "What the heck is that?" Floating on top of his apple juice was something that we affectionately called "The Brain." It seriously resembled a small brain. Obviously it wasn't, and we never could find out what The Brain actually was.

  12. I had a live mini-caterpillar in my chicken ceasar salad once. I had finished more than half and they happily have me a whole new one for free!

  13. You definitely should have gotten something free from that restaurant.

We found a fly cooked onto the top of a restaurant pizza once. Joanna

  14. The worst thing that I think I've ever found was a human finger nail in a jolly rancher candy that I was about to eat. I have a thing with chewed, clipped, removed etc. finger and toe nails...lol....so i almost threw up when I saw it in my candy. I found the number to the nestle company and called them, they sent me an envelope to send the said candy to them in and I got like 5 coupons for the huge bags of nestle candy for free. Came in handy for our church harvest festival..lol

  15. Try eating a delicious creamy nougat filled chocolate bar only to notice wiggly larva about half way through it, Hmmmmmm. Now I know why my Grandpa only ate hard candies!!

  16. Do you remember when we were at "the eating establishment with the really good breadsticks" and we had a fly in our caesar salad? Also, one time I bit into a bite of teriyaki chicken (from the place here in Ramona that I will no longer eat at) and there was a hard round piece of boney nastiness where chicken should have been. Still makes me gag.

  17. I once got a mocha latte and sucked up a fingernail through the straw. (definitely not my own since the lid had not been removed since I bought the drink). Ew is an understatement.

  18. I would have tried to get the meal or the salad for free, too! Nasty stuff! Grossest thing I can think of in my food was a long black hair...

  19. That is really gross. Once we were out to dinner and got soup. There was someones chewed up gum in it. I thought I was going to vomit. Its a wonder that I still even go out to eat.

  20. Although what we found in our food was not necessarily gross, it is a little bit scary....last night we ordered take-out from an Indian restaurant in our neighborhood.

After we each ate almost an entire plate of curry and rice we discovered a piece of glass in our food! Luckily, it was not sharp. Needless to say, we did not eat anymore of the food!

  21. I living, crawling, hairy spider was in my salad at a very favorite and popular, local restaurant. It was not a large spider so I didn't scream out loud and thankfully it didn't have to pull it out of my mouth. Ewh!
Then, at the exact same restaurant I sat down and had a fly land right in my food...at least I think it "landed" there. I'm almost sure it wasn't there before I put the dressing on.
